Australia

Last Updated: September 4th, 2011

Below you will find links to a collegiate-based astronomy map of Australia. On the map, when you move your cursor over a symbol, information about that institution will pop up. If you click on the symbol, then a new browser tab or window will appear with the webpage of the featured department.

The 20 departments displayed on the map as red dots have been classified by the Astronomical Society of Australia as "Professional Astronomy University Research Groups". The 9 departments represented on the map by purple squares are other places that I have identifed as offering at least one class devoted entirely to astronomy and/or having an astronomy research group. In cases where an institute has several campuses, I chose the location based on where the most astronomy was taught and/or researched.

Many terms are used to describe University subdivisions in Australia, which sometimes include "department", "faculty", "school", "centre", "group" and/or "institute". In light of this varied nomenclature, all red dots and most purple squares provide the names of whichever of these titles are applicable for those institutions. Additionally, the information which appears when you hover over a symbol includes the title of the university or college, the city in which the department resides, an estimate of the population of that city, and in parenthesis, the Australian state or territory containing that city. The majority of symbols are deliberately offset from their true locations in the interest of clarity and clickability. The underlying geographical map was taken from Wikimedia Commons, and was authored by Papayoung.

In order to view the map correctly, use a laptop or desktop with the latest version (as of August 1st, 2011) of Firefox, Chrome or Safari. This is likely to work. Other platform/browser combinations are unlikely to work.

I hope this map is useful!
